The Standard Bearer

John moved to the UK in 1947. He continued to  volunteer with the RAF and trained with several regular squadrons. On each occasion, lots of forms had to be filled out. John told the story of how, after two years, the pay officer noticed that he was not on parade to collect his pay, despite working so hard.

John said he was just a volunteer. John was then offered a position in 600 (City of London) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force, where he would be certain of getting paid.

John also told an amusing story of a squadron training camp in Malta, where he personally always tried to sit in the shade, while his white colleagues sunbathed as much as possible, trying to see who could get a better tan than John! Many of them were treated for sunburn or sunstroke. The Medical Officer got so angry he ordered that anyone who fell ill this way would be put on charge for self-inflicted wounds.
