The Broker

Sandy and Agnete at their wedding

After the war, Sandy went to work as a jobber with Lemon Brothers and then as a stockbroker with George Henderson and Co. He specialised in mining stocks, and travelled frequently to South Africa.  He earned success through natural charm and his determination to succeed.

His hobbies included golf (he won the White's Cup at Royal St George’s in the early 50's) and horse racing. He had many friends in the racing world and was quite a shrewd gambler: He used to take a view on the major classic races, offer odds to friends in the stock exchange and ensure that on the day of the race he had very little money at risk but a good chance of a profit if the right outcome occurred. He was also a keen shot and enjoyed fishing.

All of these activities he passed on to his children, who remember happy days sitting on a boat on a loch in Scotland with a fishing rod, rough shooting grouse (his son Angus recalls using a 16 Bore that Sandy had "liberated" from the Germans) or playing golf.

Sandy died in 1978 and is the great uncle of David Cameron MP – the former Prime Minister.
