The Surgeon

Barry at Glyndebourne

Barry had a fresh approach to his role, being known to complain that he had joined the TA “…to get away from sick people…”.  Nevertheless many soldiers had cause to thank his skills: on one occasion Barry intervened with a TA soldier’s hospital to ensure that he received the correct post-operation treatment.

Barry was at various times orthopaedic surgeon both to Brighton & Hove Albion FC and to Sussex County Cricket Club.

His main interests outside medicine lay in the Arts and his knowledge was encyclopaedic. He was a major Friend and sponsor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra over four decades. Barry’s greatest love however was opera and he was an enthusiastic supporter of Glyndebourne and the Christies over many decades. He was a very regular visitor both to Covent Garden and the ENO. Barry died in 2016.
