Activities and Events

As part of our successful bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we ran a series of activities and events at the Museum and in the local community in 2016.

The activities programme kicked off with a very well-attended talk by Professor Sir Hew Strachan, on the Yeomanry in World War One.

This was followed by a talk by Dr Patrick Mileham and Professor Ian Beckett on “The Yeoman Spirit”, and a military antiques roadshow, and a talk by our assistant curator David Whitehouse on “Researching ancestors who have served with the British Army”.

We then hosted a visit by military modelmakers, and run talks on “Waterloo – A soldier’s perspective” – a talk by Lt Gen Sir Barney White-Spunner, Honorary Colonel of the Royal Yeomanry; “Churchill” – a talk by his grandson the Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames MP, Honorary Colonel of the Kent and Sharpshooters Yeomanry; “The Reporting of War” – a talk by our curator, Dan Taylor, focusing on the battle of Villers Bocage, and another talk by Dan on “Crossing the Rover Volturno – a triumph of Sharpshooter ingenuity”.

More recently, we have run a wide range of events at the museum, including a Diversity Day in 2022 which featured the unveiling of a new oil portrait of the late John Morrison BEM, who was the grandson of a Ghanaian tribal chief, served in the RAF in WW2 and then served as our regimental standard bearer. Read his story “The Standard Bearer” on our website. The same day we also hosted a large party of Sikh visitors, to hear the story of the Sikh silver statuette in our museum – read the story of “The Oscar Winner” on this website for more details.

We have also celebrated the late Queen’s platinum jubilee and the King’s coronation by firing a salute from our WW2 25 pounder field gun in front of the castle.

Our main annual event at the museum is during Hever Castle’s Home Front weekend, which typically takes place on the last weekend of June. Check www.hevercastle.co.uk for details.

There will also be opportunities to help out with conservation and maintenance, and to be part of our Living History re-enactment group. Please contact our curator Dan Taylor at curator@ksymuseum.org.uk for more information.

You can find photos and write ups of recent events, together with adverts for upcoming events, in the news items on the home page of this website. We very much look forward to welcoming you.
